The Difference Between Consent and Consensus

This month’s presentation and conversation will be recorded, because this question comes up so often!  Making decisions by consent requires a different mindset and set of practices than most of us learned.

When people’s interests are in conflict, the group can fall into the habits of debate.  Whatever the group’s decision-making policies, debate is a tool that leads to winners and losers, and is suited to majority rule decision-making.  Consent isn’t just a matter of how the final decision is made — making decisions by consent re-frames the whole process.

At this month’s meet-up, bring your stories about consensus if you have them, as a jumping off point for a deeper group reflection.  You can read a short article Consent is a Third Option on the Circle Forward website.
